AJC is helping Israel in its fight against second-class treatment at the UN, leading the charge against anti-Semitic textbooks used by Saudi Arabia, and helping Israel gain full fledged membership in the Red Cross.

ISRAEL AND THE UNITED NATIONS

At the United Nations today, Israel remains a second-class citizen.

Of the 189 member nations of the United Nations, 188 may be elected to serve a term on the powerful Security Council. Libya, for example, may serve on the Council. So may North Korea, Iran, and Iraq.

But one country in the world -- and one country only -- may not sit on the Security Council. That country is the State of Israel.

In order to be eligible to serve on the Security Council, a country must be a member of one of the UN's five regional groups. In geographical terms, Israel is part of the Asian group. But for years, Arab and Islamic countries denied Israel the right to be a member of this grouping.

The American Jewish Committee is leading an international campaign at the highest levels of both private diplomacy and public advocacy to secure Israel's inclusion in the "Western European and Others Group" -- which includes the United States and the democracies of Europe.

Israel secured a recent victory when, in response to the extensive AJC campaign and the work of committed diplomats, WEOG invited Israel to temporarily join its group, but only in New York.

The campaign continues to secure Israel's membership in WEOG throughout the UN system -- in Geneva, Rome, Vienna, and Nairobi.

We cannot rest until Israel is accorded the full rights of membership in the UN.

And that is why we are urging you to do two things -- and to do them now. First, click here to sign your name to our online petitions to the UN ambassadors of the three countries -- France, Germany, and Greece -- demanding that Israel be accorded its full rights in the United Nations.

And second, if it is at all possible, consider making a special effort at this crucial time to support our work on behalf of Israel. Click here or on the "Give Now" button above to make a secure online contribution.
